When I look back and reflect on my experiences with writing, I realize that there are things I want to incorporate into my future classroom based on what was taught to me. I want my classroom to be a place where students are able to have a voice through their writing. I want to build a positive rapport and community with my students, allowing them to share their experiences. If they are struggling with certain things in their lives, discuss those. Praise the positive experiences as well. I have always found writing to be therapeutic for me, maybe this will be the case for my students as well. My classroom should be a place where nobody is judged and can express themselves freely. Race, socioeconomic status, religion and sex will not matter in my classroom. Each individual will be treated equally.
I want my students to be exposed to all sorts of writing genres: poetry, essays, letters, notes, etc. I feel that by having a wide variety of genres, this might engage students to want to write, even if they are students who are reluctant writers. I want my students to want to write outside of school as well. Create poems, essays, short stories, and share them.
I also really enjoy the idea of a writing workshop approach as has been described in Nancy Atwell's book, In the Middle. Atwell is able to create strong and passionate writers, which is something I truly long to be able to do. I also believe in collaborating with student's while they are writing to help brainstorm ideas and lead them to a path of success.
Here is a short poem I created on prezi discussing what I hope my students will someday write about me.
